Today is International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, as established by the UN.

The UN General Assembly proclaimed this observance in 1992 to promote public awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries, but in particular in developing countries. The first commemoration of the day took place at the Human Rights and Liberties Plaza in the Trocadéro, Paris, in 1987. The following commemorative words are engraved in stone there: "Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated. To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty."

Today is Black Poetry Day in the US. After the release of the first African-American poems by Jupiter Hammon (1711-1806) in 1760, Hammon's birthday became regarded as the birthday of black poetry in the world of English literature. Since his achievement, many black poets have contributed to English literature, and well-known black poets of the past and present -- such as Langston Hughes, Phillis Wheatley and Paul Laurence Dunbar -- are commemorated or celebrated on this day.

Today is Dessalines Day in Haiti. This day commemorates Jean-Jacques Dessalines (1758-1806), the leader of the Haitian Revolution, the governor-general and emperor who passed away on this day in 1806. After he defeated Napoleon's forces in the Battle of Vertičres, a council of generals promoted him to the post of governor-general and he crowned himself emperor in 1804. Dessalines is regarded as the founder of the Republic of Haiti due to his major role in the independence movement.

The National Geographic Society released its first issue of National Geographic Magazine for sale on this day in 1888. At first the magazine was not published on a regular basis owing to material shortages. Today National Geographic is a brand name of international science and travel magazine publishing. The magazine is particularly famous for its works on photography.

Today is the day when Mother Teresa was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Mother Teresa was an Albanian catholic nun who was born in the Republic of Macedonia in 1910. She committed herself to helping the poor and the orphaned in India. She became internationally famous for her humanitarian work by launching the Missionaries of Charity. Thus her help expanded across other countries in the world. Mother Teresa passed away in 1997.

Today is the birthday of American playwright and essayist Arthur Miller (1915-2005). Miller was born in New York and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1949 for "Death of a Salesman," one of the most significant works of American literature. He was married to the actress Marilyn Monroe in 1956 and wrote the play "After the Fall" about their relationship.

Today is the birthday of well-known Turkish singer Tarkan. Tarkan, 36, is internationally renowned for his pop songs and modern dancing style. He earned a great reputation in Europe and across the Pacific with his song "Ţýmarýk" (Sassy), in which the "sassy girl" mentioned in the lyrics is smothered with his kisses. Tarkan achieved fame through a number of his international tours without singing in English.
