Surfing through the world's largest search engine on the Web, Google, one finds interesting results. Germans search for Istanbul, Bulgarians search for famous singer Tarkan

The Dutch ''search'' for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the Australians for Turkish delight, according to the latest addition to Google, the largest search engine on the Web, that groups the most frequently searched topics according to region.

By visiting www.google.com/trends one can find detailed information on how frequently topics are searched as well as which developments and Web sites are the most popular. It is also possible to compare search ratios of the words on Trends but be sure to use the standard Latin alphabet to get international results.

Sworn rivals on trends

The rivalry between Turkey's three favorite football clubs, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Beşiktaş continues on the Internet, too. Fenerbahçe search has boomed after Roberto Carlos' transfer and the team's 1-0 victory over Inter in the Champions League. Beşiktaş and Galatasaray are searched in terms of the games they play in European competitions.

While Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş are searched most frequently by Istanbul residents, Galatasaray receives attention from the southeastern city of Diyarbakır. The three clubs also have Internet followers in Europe, especially in Germany. When searches are compared, Galatasaray precedes Fenerbahçe, which is followed by Beşiktaş.

Famous singer Tarkan is searched most by the Bulgarians, and another popular singer, Mustafa Sandal, by Australians, whereas the notable Turkish pianist Fazıl Say is searched most by the Swiss.

Mehmet Ali Ağca, an assassin who shot and wounded Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1981 in the Vatican, is searched most by the Dutch, the Germans and the Polish. Once an Internet celebrity known as ''Internet Mahir,'' Mahir Çağrı is among the famous Turks searched on the Internet in Switzerland, Canada, the United States and Ausrtalia.
